His first thought was that wow, Luke was dumb. He figured it was in part his age but he's also met (and was) smarter 7-year-olds but admittedly that shouldn't count when he comes from a prodigy-raising farm.

Anyway.

Aside from his mandatory suspicion of everyone, Luke was one of the people he trusted the most to have good intentions, honestly (or, put in a somewhat blunter way, Ray figured he either had to be a master actor or actually was that simple in which case he could not pull off being a deceptive bad guy. it all goes back to Luke being dumb).

On one hand, bad. Naive and idealistic, ugh?? On the other hand, Ray's best friend is a shounen protagonist, so he does have some begrudging respect for those types/admiration that they can keep up those attitudes when he basically never had the chance to be an idealist. Luke was obviously trying his best, in spite of all the grief, and even if Ray is pro-murder if needed and therefore does not empathize with Luke's point of view at all, he can respect that Luke never gave into the desire for vengeance.

So overall, he wishes the best for Luke because Luke was one of the few genuinely decent people in this game who actually deserves it.
