[ save fortune from this ]

That's good! People love getting nice things from gods. Though [ don't ] doing horrible things to people does tend to get them to fervently pray for you to stop, then they'll worship you to avoid your wrath!

Well, yes, you shouldn't smite your most devout worshipers, really. That's not great.

But since you control luck, if one of your worshipers is maybe not worshiping enough or doing something you don't like, you give them some truly rotten luck.

Then they'll be like "oh Fortune, why do you do this to me?" and you tell them to sacrifice a child to you, or whatever. And spread the word of your luckiness, to gain more worshipers. Then you give them the best luck!

Oh, that would be logical, wouldn't it?

[ he smiles ]

But here's the thing, if you give them good luck when they aren't worshiping, then you run the risk of them thinking they're making their own luck-- that they don't need you, that they never did, maybe even that you weren't ever real.

Well...

[ really, how many people still worship the olympians? it's not like when they were back in greece, the numero unos of the ancient world. and now... well. not quite as hardcore. he thinks of the sunrises that continue, with or without him behind the wheel of the sun chairot.

he thinks of helios, who lost his aspect to apollo, and ended up just pure angry sun energy that was going to be used to turn a shitty roman emperor into a god. ]

Well! One thing is to have demigod children, who remind their fellows of your greatness, especially if they perform great feats-- my half-brother Heracles, for example, everyone remembers who he was and who his father was, because of the things he did.

Well, no. My sister Artemis doesn't have any. She has her huntresses, though-- her maidens. They're very skilled. With weapons.

You could gather a sort of cohort of followers like that, a little gang! Make them immortal, have them follow you around.

Sure, like a family! [ he tilts his head. ] I suppose the gods you're competing with here aren't your family?
