is this the truth juice you were looking for

Shang Qinghua's first impression of Ishikirimaru was a bleeding heart who couldn't resist helping others in need. That week he asked for everyone to vote for Piety really sold the image, and after their brief spar in the armory he upgraded to bada$$ (even though Shang Qinghua regretted asking right away, because throwing himself into danger was not his thing). It was thought that, maybe, Ishikirimaru would be one of the participants who could keep the contest relatively safe by discouraging killing.

Ishikirimaru scared him the one time he showed up when Shang Qinghua was expecting Ambition for their daily training session. That was probably the first time Ishikirimaru spooked him, and it spiraled down a terrible path from there, because Shang Qinghua was cornered about his alignment and had to bend over backwards to appear accommodating after admitting to his aligning with Ambition. This was the point where he realized Ishikirimaru was fully capable of being a bloodhound and screamed inwardly that this man was capable of killing with righteous fury.

Scary.

Every time Ishikirimaru wanted to talk more about themselves, Shang Qinghua really wasn't interested in talking about himself. Ishikirimaru, on the other hand, was a living sword and super cool slash noble despite how spooky he could be, making for the perfect writing material! Of all the participants in the temple, he was one of the most fascinating to Shang Qinghua.

Then the really gay fall happened and he didn't want to play the maiden in the scenario, so he died inside and complained.

In the end, he couldn't tell if Ishikirimaru's concern for him was genuine or if the intent to get him to switch to Piety was mixed in there. Shang Qinghua thought it was, because he wouldn't have been worth Ishikirimaru's time otherwise. Since Ishikirimaru was so inviting and insistent, his resistance to revealing the truth about himself was rather weak, and he felt an odd sense of loss once he did. While he side-eyed the entire Piety versus Ambition drama, he did find Ishikirimaru to be cool and didn't want to ruin what they had, superficial though it may have been. Ishikirimaru was a surprising champ about the truth, which helped Shang Qinghua feel a little more open—but he thought what he did that night by being honest was irreparable.

That night, he also found out about Ishikirimaru's hand. Fortunately, everyone and their mother had killed by that point, so he honestly didn't care! That was like telling him, birds poop on joggers . . . after making him touch the bird poop first (thanks a lot).
