I'm still so mad you hurt me with spirit CR somehow Teej how in the fuck. HOW IN THE FUCK!!!

It's really funny because this was all 100% circumstantial I think and prior to their first talk Jack knew about Ishi and who he was but he didn't have a huge opinion on him. He was just like "oh hey cool you're kind of calm and normal I guess that's fine." And then they had their thread and he realized that Ishi was the one person in-game that would actually understand his very unique circumstances of being a spirit and something clicked for him. I've joked about Ishi becoming a dad but no, it's true, Ishi 100% took on the dad role/the North role that Jack was starting to get in canon and he learned a lot from Ishi about how to behave and how to grow into being a good protector. Seeing Ishi working with the All Nighters and especially the sacrifices he made (specifically the first time with his hand and killing Luna) was a huge wake-up call for Jack about how he had to change and what could be done. At the end of the day there's nothing but admiration and actual respect for Ishikirimaru. Ishi is one of those people that Jack will listen to 100% of the time and someone who can quell his doubts he starts to have about himself, and moreover he's someone Jack wants to make proud. He wants to make sure that Ishi has a place to go and he's remembered even after history and his home world no longer needs him, so he's highkey adamant about him coming back to them. He wants to make sure that Ishi's appreciated, more or less, and that he knows how appreciated he is.

Even with some things he never found himself capable of blaming him (i.e. killing people, Ishi going back to Ion, etc.) They were smart decisions and in the end it wasn't so much about Ishi being a follower, but he became something of a mentor. Even now Jack's not sure he can live up to an Ishi-standard like he wants, but he's going to do his best to try.
