[senri is easily content with this? he leans into tamaki's side, because it's fine, they're on a date and this is what people on dates do. there's still some weird embarrassed feeling in his chest as tamaki speaks, and senri wonders if this is where in shoujo mangas they would use all those sparkly textures and bubbles - ]
.... I definitely think we experienced something good. I'm glad that we got the chance to, even if it was just once.
[they rise higher and higher, further away from the ground, and senri doesn't find himself scared at all]
As long as you've enjoyed yourself then I'm satisfied. I have, too. [That's only said at the end before Senri can protest. They rise higher and higher, looping around once before rising again as the wheel starts to stop up toward the top.]
It's everything I could have wanted for this evening, really.
Everything? Really? We're not even at the grand finale yet.
[though that's only lightly teasing, since it seems like they'll be fast approaching as they inch closer and closer to the top. there's a breeze - not enough to rock their cart at all - but enough to get senri to remember his curse again as he presses closer to tamaki for warmth.]
.... I kind of -
[ . . . is this too mean to say? is it too bad to admit?
he thinks again of how they'll only have one night like this, and he sighs]
...I wish we could, too. But I suppose that was my fault for not realizing things sooner. [He turns just a touch to look at Senri even as he's pressed into Tamaki's side.]
But perhaps this is how it was meant to go. We can still write the perfect ending to this fairytale, can't we?
[ . . . . realizing? senri blinks quietly at that, glancing up at tamaki almost uncertainly. he wonders what he means by that but - he wonders if it'll just become more complicated if he finds out.
the cowardice wins, in that regard.
but....]
Happy endings don't exist in nonfiction...
[it's a concept that he's familiar with - something he knows painfully well. luckily, this is fiction. this is a one-time dream. and if he can continue to build new fantasies....]
.... but it reminds me of a story. Would you like to hear it?
Of course. It's one that I've been thinking of....
[senri once performed rakugo - nothing but himself, the stage, and a handful of props. this is a little different, but he still tries to paint a vivid picture in front of tamaki's eyes as he recites his tale:]
Once upon a time there was a young actor, who shined brightly on the stage, but was a pauper amongst glamour off of it. For a very long time, he thought that he only had to rely on himself - it made him talented, but lonely.
It's alright though, because it's a love story - and love redeems and saves even the loneliest of people.
At one of this actor's shows, a modern day prince arrived. Charming, handsome, the type of person that could make the entire room fall to their knees if only for a chance to be beside him. It's hard to say if it was love at first sight - perhaps at second, third, fourth... As if the infatuation only grew worse - or perhaps better - with every time they spoke.
Show after show, the line between fairytale and reality only grew more and more blurred. What chance could a liar stand against the pure heart of a prince?
[and senri laughs a little bit. his gaze finally drifts from the ground below, where everyone is still milling about, where the lights are beginning to dot against the darkness as the last light of the sunset disappears. he looks up to meet tamaki's eyes and offers up a smile, gentle yet brilliant]
I bet... their dream never had to end. I'm sure they got to fall in love, as people do. And they're enjoying a very wonderful, very happy ever after.
[are lies truly a bad thing?
or are they simply where your hopes go to keep living, even when reality isn't kind enough to give enough time?]
[It's bittersweet. It's a bittersweet story and for a moment Tamaki doesn't reply as he takes a breath and listens. The ferris wheel comes to a slow stop as they hover above the world, cart swaying gently and leaving them separated from everyone else.
He's not stupid. He can at least recognize where this tale comes from, and he's quiet as he lets Senri explain. He's also not stupid enough to not realize he's the prince in this scenario. It's a beautiful story and suddenly Senri's words from before make a little more sense. "There are no happy endings in non-fictions."
He holds his gaze, blinking in surprise but doing nothing else to move away or move any closer.]
…how do you suppose their happily ever after started? Something like this?
[reality isn't kind. it isn't pretty, and it isn't perfect. even if it's worth living in its own way, that doesn't mean that it's easy.
but senri thinks it's fine to live in a lie. in a dream. just for a little bit, just for the sake of their feelings, so they don't spend forever not knowing what they could've had. he ponders tamaki's question even as the ferris wheel stops them at their highest point and senri feels that suspension, that weightless feeling, just as much as he feels the beating of his own heart in his chest]
... it normally all starts and ends with a kiss, doesn't it?
[...well, yes, but somehow that hadn't really occurred to him so it takes a few moments for him to ponder that.]
True love's first kiss. The climax of the story as it reaches its finale. [They know how fairytales go, and the idea makes him a little sad and a little nervous and a little...something.]
...it signifies the end. [So. What are they going to do about that, really.]
[ . . . it's nice that senri doesn't have to be afraid of touching tamaki. of everyone left in the temple, tamaki is the one that senri doesn't have to be nervous about. so he watches his face for a moment, then reaching up to brush against tamaki's jawline with his thumb, hand hovering by his face as if to claim his attention, to keep him in place]
... we said we'd be fine tomorrow. We'll start - something a little different, but just as good.
[it has to be just as good.]
With every ending, there's a new beginning....
[even though it means their dream will have to conclude, and this will have to be over.]
[Naturally he leans into the touch anyway, arm tightening around Senri even as he lets him speak.]
...we'll still be together. I suppose that's what counts, even if it's a little different. It's just as good. [He stops then, looking him over carefully.]
[ah - senri tries not to enjoy the arm around him too much, even though he can't help but appreciate the idea of someone who wants to hold onto him that much.
We're still up in the air. [Maybe that has double-meaning, maybe he just means they're physically in the air. His free hand moves to use his finger to lift Senri's chin a bit.] Curfew, remember?
[He can be polite and a perfect prince as necessary and even though this is absolutely a terrible idea, he just scoots a little closer and tilts his head just enough to catch Senri in a kiss.
Somewhere, probably, fireworks go off because in a perfect fairytale this would be the moment that says "everything will be alright."
senri leans into the kiss because he understands it's the only one that he'll ever get from his prince charming, and he supposes that's just as well. for now, they can pretend that this is the end and the beginning of their story together. this is where the camera would end scene, roll credits, and everything is a very true happily ever after.
the fireworks boom in the sky and compete with senri's heart trying to escape his chest for attention.
[It doesn't last long or much beyond a simple, sweet kiss and for a moment Tamaki figures that for his first attempt at one it's not so bad. It reminds him of things he left behind, people he left behind, and people he's met here.
Senri is and always was a somewhat complicated case, this weird mix of someone who his own soul reached out for and who reminded him so much of someone he missed terribly. In the end, Senri became his own person that Tamaki found himself drawn to for inexplainable reasons. He knows they can't be anything more than friends after this, and that he'll simply have to do what he can to make sure Senri remains safe under his care.
But perhaps it's better this way, to have one perfect day and pretend they get the best ending.
Fireworks explode and after a few moments he pulls back just enough to speak as the ferris wheel begins to turn again to take them to the ground.]
[they begin to descend, and senri thinks about how he would like more time.
tamaki had suggested that they just go on the ferris wheel, again and again, however many times that they'd like.
but it's a little funny, he thinks, that it only took their first try to get the timing perfectly right. and there's no excuse to keep going when there are no more fireworks to wait for. again, it feels like the dream is unraveling and this time there's nothing that he can do to protest it. he pulls away when tamaki does and he breathes out a shaky laugh at his words]
... Once upon a time starts again tomorrow.
[ . . . it's not tomorrow yet.
so senri can move to press his face into the crook of tamaki's neck to hide his expression, to obscure the red that's crawled up his face, to hide the fact that his heart's hardly ever felt so full while crumbling at the exact same time.]
It isn't over yet. [A gentle reminder because Senri's busy clinging to him and Tamaki's busy thinking about the fact that situations like this continue to happen, where someone he cares about draws the attention of someone else before he can really understand what's happening himself.
He's allowed this once, maybe. Hikaru had said "give it your all."
Perhaps it was time to really do that.]
But today has been perfect. [The ferris wheel lowers to the ground and stops, waiting for them to step off.]
senri will get up when tamaki does, essentially attached to his side even as they step off the ferris wheel chart. laughing faintly - ]
It has been. [so perfect that he's almost upset that he'll never get to have it again but - he supposes that this is par for the course. nothing lasts forever.]
... I should probably start heading back soon though.
