...a boy I considered a friend liked a girl. He told me he didn't want me to come on a trip with them because he liked this girl, and he was planning to ask her out. I wasn't even aware of it until then, and so they went.

She rejected him, but he came back to me and said that I was to give it everything I've got and stop holding back. I suppose he, too, was annoyed into doing things and tried to annoy me as well.

Yes. We don't have to wear them when it's just us, or when we're with those of you we've built enough of a relationship with, but otherwise it's always the masks and the cloaks. They're not exactly flattering either.
