...Hikaru and I have always been at odds about different things. Both of the twins and I have, actually. But they're still family and I have no regrets reaching out to them when I did.

Hikaru especially is very much like you...I believe you two would agree it's better not to get close to others, except for some exceptions.

Hikaru and Kaoru. [He nods.] Hikaru is the one who liked Haruhi, yes. I've known him for a few years now.

They are. But they're growing up and getting better. Their world's still expanding and they're learning to function...but there are some things that will never change.

Kyoya has his own quirks. ["Kyoya is also a little bitchy but I love him so it's fine."] You two are similar in your actions and how you hold people at arms length.

He's the one who would call you dumb, right?

Yes. He would call me incredibly dumb and perhaps a bit pathetic but he'd still support me anyway and ensure I played this game well because that's just what Kyoya does. He'd say it's for his own benefit, but I've known him long enough to know that isn't the case.

[A beat.] ...often times I think he's afraid and relies on me. So I have to do my best to make a world for people like him. [People who can live beyond their expectations. It's absolutely in part because of Kyoya.]

[bakaomi]

Huh.

[ it's not surprising to hear tamaki would have someone like that. he probably would have gotten himself into trouble otherwise. ]

It sounds like you're each other's babysitters.

[He actually laughs at that.]

Perhaps so. Kyoya was put in charge of me on my first day at Ouran...and after that he accompanied me on all of my trips to see the country. But he can handle himself fairly well on his own.

Is he also obnoxiously rich?

[ he assumes so since like, RICH ASS SCHOOL. ]

[A slow nod.] The Ootori family is well-renowned in the medical world, particularly in the line of health facilities and hospitals. His eldest brother works in the same hospital as their father, and his second eldest brother is in medical school with the same hopes.

...unlike them, Kyoya's doing things on his own time. I'm rather proud of him, actually.

[bakaomi]

... nah, that seems pretty cool.

[ to not do what's expected of you, even when everyone else is following that path. ]

[Things Tamaki isn't saying: he forced Kyoya's hand into breaking out of his confinements.]

They are. [And he sounds so, so soft talking about them, fondness dripping from his tone whether he wants it to or not.] They're the reason for everything that I do, truthfully, and they've helped inspire my vision for the world. Even if we're apart now...I'd like to go forward and create something that they would be proud of.

... well, you'd probably be fine. You'd know better than anyone about them.

Probably. [A thin smile.] But even knowing people so well...one often wonders how much there is to know. [He places his chin in his hand.] There's always a lot to learn about other people, even those closest to us. Perhaps those are the people we never will truly know everything about anyway.

[bakaomi]

That's not always a bad thing, you know.

What makes you say that's not a bad thing? Wouldn't you want to know?

I think it's impossible to know every part of another person. Sometimes you don't even understand yourself completely, so how can you expect someone else to?

When you put it that way I suppose you have a fair point. But at the same time...how do you know when you don't fully understand yourself? I feel like perhaps that is one of the greater mysteries of life waiting to be solved.

I think it's... you won't really know how you'll react to something until you're put into the situation.

[ he gestures around them. ]

Like here. I learned a lot about myself from being here that I would have never found out if I never came.

I suppose that's true...even though the potential has always been there, it may have been buried until the right time. I think that's maybe less about knowing yourself and more about exposing the other parts of yourself.

But not a bad comparison to make.
