[Merriment doesn't look too merry when Yu returns to the west wing, but that could be because they're wearing a mask. The piece of wood is being passed back and forth between their hands as they sit on a low ledge of one of the houses in the village, and when they speak the tone's incredulous.]
Ouch. Already with the hard-hitting questions huh? [Merriment doesn't reply immediately, getting to their feet instead and seemingly jumping up to a higher ledge to walk along it. Bare footprints are left in the snow as they move.]
...no. [It's hesitant though and Merriment hops to another ledge but still in eyesight and earshot.] I don't really know. A person can think they're a person but maybe that doesn't matter so much if other people don't think they are. So isn't it more up to other people to decide?
[Hm...] I'm the kind of person who puts wood over a hole I accidentally created thinking it'd fix the mess I made.
The only one who can decide if you're a person is you, Merriment. No one can dictate that for you. Not me or anyone else. In the end, I guess that makes the question ... what do you want to be?
Not really for me to tell, kiddo. Ask 'em and they'll tell you on their own. It's leverage to get people on their teams, but let's just say some of them are a lot nicer than others. There are some in the pantheon that have ideals I don't agree with. As long as I stay in the game, there's a chance to make sure they don't win. Everything after that? I don't care.
... for someone who just called themselves a winner, you don't seem that intent on actually winning. [ quiet, without accusation. ] It sounds a lot like you just want to make sure that things turn out for the best.
The world should be something protected where the darkness isn't going to be too overbearing. I get that people have troubles and worries, but I want a world where you can overcome those because the light will be right there. I want a world where you can protect the things that matter, responsibilities aren't stressful, and people remember that fun is just as important as growing up.
[ ... kind of stares at Merriment in some small surprise? Whatever he was expecting, it wasn't that.
In the end Yu will hum, a deeply thoughtful sound. ]
That sounds like a nice world to live in. [ his voice is sort of nostalgic. He'll smile then, sudden but quiet. ] If that's the case, then ... I'm honored I'm one of the people you were willing to give a chance.
[Merriment stops walking around and kicking the snow, looking down at Yu curiously though it's hard to see with the mask.]
Even if I don't win...as long as it's one of the others who have good ideas in mind I'm not too worried. They're good kids who'll need some guidance anyway. [And they jump down to land in front of Yu.]
Can't say I'm too surprised you picked who you did, so...thanks for considering me anyway.
Then keep trying to do that, kiddo. This game's going to weigh on people and upset them, but as long as there's people around to still help bring joy to them it might soften the blow. That's all I can really ask.
WEEK 2, WEDNESDAY
Now what makes you think I needed this back?
no subject
[ The way that's phrased seems to surprise him, and Yu will shake his head as he walks over. ]
No, it wasn't that. It was a question.
no subject
So what's the question?
no subject
[ But he's thoughtful then, watching the god watching him. ]
What sort of person are you, Merriment?
no subject
Can a god be a person?
no subject
I think so. Don't you?
no subject
no subject
I'm not sure that's up to me, [ he'll say softly. ] Isn't that something they can decide for themselves?
no subject
[Hm...] I'm the kind of person who puts wood over a hole I accidentally created thinking it'd fix the mess I made.
no subject
How sad.
After a moment: ]
The only one who can decide if you're a person is you, Merriment. No one can dictate that for you. Not me or anyone else. In the end, I guess that makes the question ... what do you want to be?
no subject
A winner. I'm pretty behind in terms of the competition, but if I can beat the people who would make the world worse then that's all I care about.

What have they said?

... I suppose it is.
What do you want the world to be, Merriment?

[ A slight smile. ]
Merriment... it's something I'd have liked to align myself with, if things had been different. Bringing joy to others... it's a special thing.

Then keep trying to do that, kiddo. This game's going to weigh on people and upset them, but as long as there's people around to still help bring joy to them it might soften the blow. That's all I can really ask.

Mind if I come see you again sometime?
no subject
Sure. You know how to find me just like everybody else. [They're an offering away, after all.]
