...I was on my own for a while after I ran away from home, but eventually I met this girl. We found each other inside a dragon cave and we teamed up after that. Few years younger than me, still one of the most intense people I've ever met. She was like me. Half mortal, half god. We made a good team.
Eventually we found another girl. She was seven at the time. I was fourteen. And for a while after that it was just the three of us. Life sucked and it was hard to know how long we were gonna survive or where we were gonna get our next meals or how I was supposed to take care of two other people including myself, but the company was nice. We tried to give her the most normal experiences as possible, so we'd check out stores and sneak into places and celebrate birthdays and holidays where we could. Trained a lot. Traveled a lot. Anything to keep the morale up.
Camp itself wasn't always about training either. The campfire's not just for show. Fireworks would be lit on the beach every Fourth of July for a show. Sometimes field trips happened. After a while it just felt normal, whatever that word even means anymore.
Yeah. The Hephaestus cabin used to set them up so that they'd actually show battle sequences and myths in the sky. It was this huge...thing for people.
[And also a huge dating thing, but he leaves that out for now.]
You're learning the layout. [Up and following. If he wasn't in his cloak his hands would be in his pockets and he tries even as he walks. Damnit.]
We used to use the forge for fixing old weapons and stuff, too. Most of us stayed out of their way, but I picked up a few things on my own from watching.
Not really. Not on purpose. I'm more of an alchemist, and even that's a little iffy. [The approach the forge and he looks around, spotting a box of pre-made fireworks. It doesn't surprise him that they're there.]
...my father was Hermes, and he's not the god of the forge, so that wasn't passed onto me.
Merchants, travelers, athletes...thieves. And the messenger of the gods. [He's taking the box and heading back out of the forge to walk toward the beach.]
Yup. I used to hate it as a kid. [To the beach! He leads them to a good spot before he sets the box down and just flops in the sand to start going through the box.] Saved me a few times though since I can also tell if a lock's tampered with or if it's a trap. Same with picking up monsters and demigods that're nearby. All of my abilities are because of him, but my skill's all my own.
Yeah. Thalia used to think it was really cool and made me do it whenever I had the chance. [There are a lot of fireworks, and Cunning seems to have a lighter of some sort.]
[She watches the firework until it cracks into life, gazing up as the color sails through the air. She understands the significance of that 'was' all too well.]
Oh yeah, she was. Hands down one of the coolest people I ever knew. [He's grabbing another firework, positioning it to light.] And one of the bravest...sacrificed herself for us and everything. That tree on the hill used to be her until she was revived. That was a weird time.
As she was dying, her dad encased her spirit into the pine tree. The tree started dying because it was poisoned a few years back in my world, but when it was healed with the Golden Fleece the tree revived and so did she. She didn't age a day during all that time.

Hey. What did you do for fun or in your free time before... all of this?

Nothing too exciting.

[So 95% of that is horrifying and she wants to cheer him up instead of remind him of something painful, which is why—]
Were they nice? The fireworks.

...Cabin 9, but if anything the supplies would be in the forge. It's where they built everything.

You wanna go?

Sure, why not? Nothing else to do, right?

[She turns towards it.]

[It doesn't come to her immediately, so she trails off, waiting for him to supply the answer.]

Ready when you are.

Thalia was my best friend. The one I met as a kid. [The other demigod.]
